Everything you need to know about fireplaces, grills, hot tubs, and outdoor furniture. Five Puget Sound locations in Lynnwood, Bellevue, Southcenter, Tacoma, and Silverdale.
We have a new “toy” to show you at all five Rich’s showrooms. It’s the Tropitone Color Center.
The Color Center is an online tool that allows you to easily mix and match finishes and fabrics on many of Tropitone’s products and instantly see how the combinations look together.
It’s a dream-come-true for interior decorators and the decorator-challenged alike, because you can try out different combinations until you come up with something that really appeals to the eye, and complements your home’s other furnishings.
Warning: The Color Center is addicting – it offers 16 finishes and nearly 120 fabric choices – so allow plenty of time to play.
Once you select the finish and fabric you like best, you can special order your furniture immediately.
We got a little carried away at the Tropitone Color Center ourselves – here are images of some of the combinations we experimented with, to give you an idea of how you can make the same chair look completely different, just by changing the finish and fabric.
These first six photos are all of the Torino Sling.
#1: Obsidian finish with Waffle Wicker Blue fabric #2: Sonora finish with Sailor Sand fabric #3: Graphite finish with Caracas fabric #4: Rich Earth finish with Mojito Coffeebean fabric #5: Almond Silk finish with Nova Earth fabric #6: Obsidian finish with Canvas Hot Pink fabric
Next, take a look at what we did with the Lakeside Swivel Action Lounger:
#1: Aluminum Metallic finish with Canvas henna fabric #2: Greco finish with Cabana Mahogany fabric #3: Almond Silk finish with Leigh Lemon fabric #4: Sonora finish with Bristol Air Blue fabric

If you're looking for gorgeous hardwood furniture that does double duty -- both inside your home and outdoors, look no further than Ipé (EE-pay), manufactured by Jensen Leisure.
Pictured above: Pearl Gateleg Group with folding chairs: The table folds -- perfect for on a boat.
Environmentally Friendly
Ipé is a fine-grained, buttery-smooth hardwood from the Chiquitania forest reserve in Eastern Bolivia. Because of the nature of tropical dry forest, trees there grow very slowly. Consequently, some of the world's strongest and most durable woods come from the Chiquitania forest.
From an environmental standpoint, no product is more environmentally conscious than Ipé timber. All wood used in the manufacturing of Jensen Leisure Furniture is Forest Stewardship Council-certified, which means that the FSC can track a piece of furniture all the way back to the original tree it was cut from. A hectare of forest is divided into 25 sections and trees that heave reached 85-99% of their natural lifetime are selectively cut from one section.
Weather-Resistant
Jensen uses the heart wood from Ipé trees (also known as Tajibo in Bolivia) in their furniture; other parts of the tree are used for flooring and plywood.
Ipé is chocolate-brown when new, and the sun transforms it to a silver patina. Because it is so dense, Ipé naturally resists splintering as well as rot, decay, insects, carpenter ants, mold, and even fire. Weather has little to no negative effect on Ipé, making it an ideal choice for Pacific Northwest outdoor rooms.
Award-Winning
The Topaz stacking chair won a design award, and its cousin, the Topaz folding chair, is a top seller at Rich's showrooms -- last season, we sold them right off the container!
We suggest investing in both stacking chairs and folding chairs. Here's the top-selling folding sling chair:
And here's the stacking chairs and a 48" square table from our Lynnwood showroom:
For something fun and different for lounging on your deck or boat, here's a fresh take: A two-piece Atlantic Steamer chair with footrest.
Another style we adore is the Opal Swivel Chat. These deep chairs, new this season, rock and swivel. We paired lounge cushions in a a soothing ivory and butter palette with patterned accent pillows.
You can fit four swivel rockers around the chat table pictured below, or around a fire pit.
Here's a closeup of the Opal Swivel Rocker:
And here's the same rocker paired withthe Opal Sofa (88" wide), Opal Coffee Table (17" high), and Opal End Table.
Rich’s for the Home has been selling Jensen Leisure furniture for over 20 years and is the exclusive dealer of Jensen Leisure’s Ipé furniture in the Greater Seattle area.

You’re going to be seeing brighter, lighter colors in outdoor furniture this season. Often, those bright colors will be paired with graphite gray or black frames that’ll make your furniture really pop.
We’ve spent the last two weeks redecorating all five Rich’s showrooms, and we are so excited about this season’s lineup of outdoor furniture colors, styles, and materials. Today, you’re going to get a sneak peek so you can begin planning your special order to furnish your patio, sun room, vacation home, or boat.
First, back to Tangerine Tango (which we call “Papaya” at Rich’s). Our Papaya cushions make a terrific accent to either black or cream-colored furnishings.
And then there’s hot pink. We’ve ordered hot pink patio umbrellas that will add a splashy accent to black furniture.
Black
Speaking of black furniture, you’ll want to check out the Porte Collection from Ebel. One of our customers is outfitting his rooftop garden with the Porte collection, constructed of woven high-grade vinyl (synthetic wicker).
Our favorite in this contemporary collection is the new triangular glass top tables (which we call tri-top).
Pictured below are a tri-top bar table and stools.
Graphite
Grays, charcoals, and blacks are going to be hugely popular this season. Here’s a sample from the Palazzo Collection by OW Lee. Using Grecian style as its inspiration, this wrought iron love seat has a graphite frame, complemented with charcoal and gray striped cushions.
Imagine this 2-seat sofa, a couple of club chairs, and a swivel rocker clustered around a fire pit with a black top and black tumbled fire glass. Perfection. Woven + Other Textures = Win-Win
Another trend this season is mixing textures. Pictured below is an aluminum dining table that looks just like weathered teak. The only way to tell the difference is to get within an inch or two of the table and “knock on wood” (or, in this case, aluminum). It’s fantastic, and much more durable than teak in our moist climate.
The thick weave in these synthetic wicker dining chairs promises to be a big hit this year. Popular colors in this weave are Willow (a lighter gray) and Driftwood, a grayish/taupe that is another one of Pantone’s top colors for 2012. Curves are “In”
There are so many configurations you can accomplish with woven furnishings: semi-circles, full circles, serpentines – you name it. No matter what size or shape your space, chances are, you can create a configuration that’s a perfect fit.

They’re stylish. They’re space-saving. Media consoles are the must-have home décor innovation for 2012.
Media consoles do triple duty:
They store media components
They have a reinforced shelf on top for a wide screen TV
They include a built-in electric fireplace
Designs
You can find a media console to complement any style of home décor – they come in traditional, transitional, and contemporary designs. Several models allow you to choose a finish. Common finishes include oak, walnut, mocha, espresso, natural, matte black, black satin, or stainless steel.
Firebox Options
The built-in electric firebox comes equipped with either a traditional log set or a contemporary glass ember bed – several models allow you to customize which type of firebox display you prefer.
Features
While the typical media console is the horizontal (landscape) design, several are configured to fit in corners (perfect for a bedroom or condo living room).
All media consoles feature generous storage compartments, cabinet space, and shelving so you can neatly store (or hide) your collection of remotes, media components, speakers and DVDs.
They also come equipped with a heavy duty surface for housing your television – the platforms on some models support TVs of up to 60 inches.
Stop by and ask our sales associates to show you how you can create a unique look for your home with a media console. If you don’t see quite what you want in our showroom, we’d be happy to order ANY product from the Dimplex catalog for you.

Electric fireplaces are undergoing major redesigns to reflect Americans' desire to save space and heat efficiently, while still enjoying the benefits of a crackling fire. Here are five concepts that are revolutionizing the electric fireplace industry:
1. You can have flames without heat.
Electric fireplaces are efficient at zone heating, and they’re certainly a lot better looking than baseboard heaters or fan-forced wall heaters.
But perhaps the most attractive quality of an electric fireplace is its ambiance. With the flick of a switch, you can turn off the heat and enjoy the flickering flames any day of the year.
One of our favorite ambient fireplaces is the Illuminations Electric Fireplace (pictured above) from Fireplace Extordinair (FPX). This candlescape fireplace features flickering LED flame technology, and enhances the design of any bedroom or bath.
2. Fireplace “smoke” isn’t really smoke.
The OptiMyst from Dimplex is revolutionizing the entire electric fireplace industry with its patented smoke effect. The OptiMyst creates a three-dimensional flame, glowing logs and a shimmering ember bed, and produces “smoke” that is actually mist.
Pictured below are the contemporary Rockwell model (left) and the traditional Renwick.
This 5-second video demonstrates what the OptiMyst fire looks like:
3. Fireplaces and TVs go together. Media consoles are absolutely the hottest items in the electric fireplace industry for 2012. These space-saving units are both practical and add a significant “wow” factor to your family room, media room, or “man cave.”
A typical media console includes storage for media components (receiver, DVD/Blu-Ray player, speakers), space on top for a wide screen TV, and of course, a built-in electric fireplace. Media consoles come in many shapes and sizes, from the ultra-sleek Novara (below, left) to the transitional Brookings (below, right).
4. Slim and sleek is in.
Wall-mounted fireplaces such as the Synergy from Dimplex have a linear look, similar to a flat screen TV. Because they mount right on a wall, they open up much more living space in a room while simultaneously serving as a beautiful focal point.
5. Glass is the new log.
Log fireplaces are quickly becoming a thing of the past. Today, you’re more likely to see decorative flame beds customized with colored glass, stone, black pebbles, or driftwood.
This Convex Wall-Mount electric fireplace from Dimplex has black pebbles in the flame bed, and can be customized with a variety of decorative fill, so your fireplace will complement your home’s décor.

My office is located in the lower level of our tri-level home, so it’s perennially chilly – sometimes downright cold – in my little room. I stopped by Rich’s to see what they offer in the way of space heaters, and was introduced to a funky little red electric fireplace called the Mini Cube.
The sales literature calls the Mini Cube a “unique and charming electric stove.” But I call it “cute” and my husband calls it “cool.”
Other than its compact size (13-inch width x 14 ½-inch height x 8-inch depth), the feature that instantly sold my husband and me is that the Mini Cube looks like a real fireplace. There’s a glowing coal bed with dancing flames, generated by a hidden clear 60-watt chandelier or candelabra bulb.
Despite the appeal of the fireplace-esque flames, our bottom line when it comes to purchasing a space heater is: Does it crank out the heat?
Turns out this little guy (I’ve decided this fireplace is of the male gender) heats quite efficiently. It heats up to 400 square feet. The low heat setting provides 600 watts of heat output, while the high setting cranks out 1200 watts, comparable to the large, ugly space heater in my kitchen.
The Mini Cube plugs into a standard 110/120 V household outlet, and has a quiet fan. I read several reviews of the Mini Cube online, and buyers highly recommend it for use in the following types of rooms:
Office
Apartment
Bedroom
Rec room
Dorm room (as long as college rules allow for space heaters)
Kitchen
Hobby Room
RV
The Mini Cube comes in a gloss-red finish. If you’re looking something a bit larger or in a white chrome finish, consider the Mini Cube’s big brother, aptly named The Cube.
Reminding me of my Apple computer from the early 90s, The Cube is 18 ½ inches wide x 18 ½ inches tall x 10 ¼ inches deep and provides 1,480 watts of heat output (650 watts on the low setting and 1300 watts on high).
The Cube and Mini Cube are manufactured by Dimplex, the industry leader in electric fireplaces. Dimplex products are produced by our neighbors to the north in Ontario, Canada.
And here’s the best news: For a limited time, Rich’s is offering the Mini Cube for $99 (it retails for $149). That’s a great price for an electric fireplace that’s not only efficient, but provides a lot more ambiance than a run-of-the-mill space heater.

When I stopped by Rich’s on Saturday to purchase a new bubble cover for my Clearwater Spa, I joked with the sales associate that they build these spas too well. We’ve owned our Clearwater Spa for 16 years. My family of four (which includes two teenage boys) uses it heavily, but all the jets still work and it cranks out the heat.
I live with chronic back pain, and I can’t tell you how many times a dose of hydrotherapy has helped me rest better at night.
While I was buying my bubble cover – officially known as a “floating thermal blanket” (which, incidentally, is the best spa accessory we’ve ever purchased because it traps the heat beneath the hard cover and significantly decreases our electric bill) – I picked up some literature on Clearwater Spas.
There are three levels of Clearwater Spas:
XS Series – I call these “entry level” spas. Although they’re engineered the same as the luxury models and they’re extremely energy efficient, the XS Series models come with fewer bells and whistles and are quite affordable.
Beachcraft Series – These “middle of the road” spas are a bit roomier and include features such as multi-level steps, cool-down seats and ergonomically designed seating configurations.
Resort Series – “Elegant” and “decadent” are words I’d use to describe these luxury spas. Lots of jets. Multiple pumps. Custom lighting. Custom waterfalls. Everything you could ever want in a spa.
Being a budget-minded person, I eyeballed the XS Series spas, which currently include eight models (new models for 2012 are now available for ordering). I asked the sales associate, “Which of these models would you recommend for folks who are buying their first spa?”
“It depends on the size of your family, and on the size of the people who will be using the spa,” he replied.
For a couple, he recommended the XS76NL - Signature (pictured, right). This model seats 6 adults in an open seating arrangement, has 40 jets, and holds 300 gallons of water.
For a couple with young kids, he recommended the XS84NL. It also seats 6 adults and has a kid-friendly cool-off bench so young ones can get their little bodies mostly out of the spa for a few minutes while still dangling their feet in.
For a family with teens (or several adult-sized people), he recommended the XS93NL - Signature (pictured, top right), which seats 8 adults. The largest of the XL Series line, this spa holds 450 gallons of water and has 40 jets.
All Clearwater Spas come in a variety of shell colors and cabinet styles colors, and Rich’s carries a full line of spa accessories and chemicals.
I can’t recommend Clearwater Spas highly enough. If and when my hardy Clearwater Spa ever dies, I’ll replace it with another Clearwater Spa.
All this writing about spas is making my back ache; I’ll give you one guess where I’m heading next.

You know it's going to happen. We're going to have one of our famous Pacific Northwest wind storms and the power is going to go out. Depending on what neck of the woods you live in, your power may stay out for days.
When the inevitable happens, you don't have to bundle up in wool blankets or heat up cans of baked beans over your camp stove. If you own a Lopi or Avalon wood stove with a cooktop, you can simultaneously stay toasty and cook dinner.
A stove with a direct cooktop will run at about 600 degrees, so you'll want to put your saucepan or frying pan on a cast iron trivet to keep the heat flowing evenly.
A stove with a cooktop will also have a warming surface, which has air circulating around it so it's not as hot as the direct cooktop. The warming surface is is ideal for mulling cider or heating hot cocoa or soup.
In this video from our friends at Travis Industries in Mukilteo (manufacturer of Avalon and Lopi hearth products), you'll learn some good tips for cooking on your wood stove.
The video also includes some excellent tips for operating and maintaining your wood stove:
Cleaning: Don’t ever clean all of the ashes out of the firebox. Always leave 1- 1 ½ inches of ash bed inside the bed of the firebox. This makes it easier to start a fire because it builds up the temperature more quickly, and will establish a coal bed faster.
Door Gasket Once a year check the door gasket -- that’s the figerglass weave rope that goes around the inside of the stove's door. If the door gasket compacts too much, you’ll bring air in around the door feeding the fire and you won’t have as much control on your air control. Depending on how often you open and close the door, you'll want to replace the door gasket annually to semi-annually.
Chimney Have a chimney sweep inspect and clean your chimney at least once a season. (Call your local Rich's store to arrange for a chimney cleaning.)

While holiday meals traditionally mean “turkey and stuffing” or “ham," many of us dare to think outside the box. Last Thanksgiving, in addition to the usual big bird, my brother smoked a delicious roast in his outdoor grill.
If you’d like to try something different, here are some delicious recipes you can prepare on your Broilmaster grill or Big Green Egg.
Use a vegetable peeler to slice the carrots, zucchini, and squash into wide, thin ribbons, then cut the ribbons lengthwise into thin julienned slices with a knife. You will have a medley of brightly colored vegetables all intertwined like long, thin, beautiful noodles. This is a dish that cooks in a matter of minutes and would go well as a side dish with roasted chicken or pork.
Ingredients:
Sauce ½ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (3 lemons) ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice (1 orange) ½ cup rice wine vinegar ½ cup soy sauce 4 teaspoons red curry paste ½ cup peanut oil 1 cup sliced shallots 2 tablespoons minced fresh ginger 2 teaspoons minced garlic 2 cups julienned red bell pepper 2 cups snow peas 4 cups julienned napa cabbage 2 cups julienned carrots 2 cups julienned zucchini 2 cups julienned yellow crookneck squash 4 cups bean sprouts 18 to 20 scallions, green parts only, cut in half lengthwise 1 cup firmly packed fresh basil leaves 1 cup firmly packed fresh cilantro leaves ½ cup firmly packed fresh mint leaves 1 cup thinly sliced red radishes 1 cup chopped peanuts
Equipment:
Porcelain coated grid, Dutch Oven Set the EGG for direct cooking with the porcelain coated grid. Preheat the EGG to 400ºF. Set the Dutch Oven on the grid and preheat for 10 minutes. To make the sauce, use a whisk to stir the lemon juice, orange juice, vinegar, soy sauce, and red curry paste together in a small bowl.
Pour the peanut oil into the preheated Dutch Oven.
Add the shallots, ginger, garlic, bell pepper, and snow peas.
Close the lid of the EGG and sauté for 30 seconds.
Add the cabbage, carrots, zucchini, squash, bean sprouts, and scallions and cook for 1 minute.
Add the sauce and cook for 30 seconds. Remove the Dutch Oven from the heat, then add the basil, cilantro, and mint and stir.
Place the mixture in individual bowls and garnish with the radishes and peanuts. Serve immediately.

I love watching the flickering flames in my gas stove from all angles. Which would explain why I like the Bristol stove from Hearthstone. With its three-sided fire viewing area, I can spend hours lounging near this attractive stove, which, incidentally, comes in three colors: black, brown, and basil.
Couch potato’s dream
The Bristol is both attractive and efficient. It heats up to 1800 square feet, and its remote control allows you to adjust several of the stove’s features from anywhere in the room:
“Smart thermostat”: Control the room temperature up or down, just as you would with a regular thermostat. This feature modulates the stove’s flame levels automatically as the room reaches your set-point temperature.
Five-level flame control: Adjust the flame height up or down.
Two-stage (split) burner: Change the ambiance of your room.
Five-speed fan control: Regulates the blower’s function and speed.
“Child-safe” lock-out feature: Prevents little ones from fiddling with the stove’s controls.
ProFlame electronic ignition system
When your stove isn’t in use, the pilot is off, resulting in considerable fuel savings. The Bristol also comes with a battery backup, so you can use the stove even if one of our winter wind storms leaves you without electricity.
Natural Gas or Propane
The Bristol is factory configured for natural gas, but is easily convertible to work with liquid propane.

Thirty-one years ago, a young rock ‘n roll drummer named Kurt Rumens began selling wood stoves so he could pay for gas to drive his band to gigs.
Kurt examined the stoves he was selling and thought, “These stoves need heavier steel. They need to burn more efficiently. And they need to be prettier.”
He decided to do something about it. Kurt and his friend, Dick Miller founded their own stove company, Lopi Stoves, in the garage of Kurt’s Bellevue home.
Today, as president of Travis Industries, Kurt is still actively involved in the design and production of every Lopi Stove. Along with the Lopi brand, Travis Industries manufactures three additional brands: Avalon, Fireplace Xtrordinair, and Tempest Torch Gas Lamps.
This coming weekend, you have the opportunity to meet this vibrant man who truly loves creating wood, pellet, and gas stoves, fireplaces, and fireplace inserts. Kurt will be at Rich’s Lynnwood store Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23 from noon to 3 PM. He’ll be talking about breakthrough technologies in stoves and sharing other interesting and fun facts about stoves.
In addition to meeting Kurt Rumens at Rich’s, you can tour the Travis Industries factory, a sprawling 11-acre facility in Mukilteo. The House of Fire Factory Tour is free and open to everyone who’s interested (Note: Please no children under the age of 8 years old). Registration is required for tour entry – just ask any Rich’s sales associate to help you register for a tour.
